Observer 4000M / 4000R Web Viewer Video Inspection System

Freezes the moving print at production speed: 2 MP camera, 30X optical zoom, 100 × 75 mm window — so the operator judges the print without stopping the press.

Two builds of one system: 4000R manual rail, 4000M motorized rail up to 3 m.

The system

What the Observer 4000 web viewer does

The Observer 4000 is a still-picture viewer. The camera freezes the moving web into the controller and shows it on a monitor, so the operator can judge registration, ink coverage, small text and surface defects at running speed.

It replaces two habits on most presses: walking the web with a loupe or a hand strobe, and stopping the machine to pull a printed sheet. It does not replace an inspection system that rejects defective print — that is a different job, covered further down.

Who it is for: press operators, QC and shift supervisors on label, flexo, gravure, coating and laminating lines who need a repeatable view of the print without slowing the run.

Where it sits: Entry+ tier — above a mark-only viewer (Scout 3, OR-A), below the touch-screen patrol viewer (Overseer, Mid) and the full-width viewer (OR-D, Mid+). It is deliberately basic: capture and freeze, nothing to configure on the shift.

Why this platform: more than 2,000 sets delivered a year and over 10,000 in service. That installed base is what keeps spare parts, settings knowledge and service response available years after delivery.

02

Fit

Is the Observer 4000 the right fit?

A viewer answers one question: can the operator see the print clearly at speed. If the job needs automatic judgement, another model in the range does that.

What you needObserver 4000Where to go instead
Visual check of registration, ink dots, streaks, voids, barcodes, small text✔—
Label, flexo, gravure, coating and laminating presses, narrow to wide web✔—
Manual or motorized traverse, rail made to your web width✔—
Only crosshair or registration marks—Scout 3 (Entry) or OR-A (Entry)
Saved-position patrol (fixed points, remote recall)—Overseer 100 / 200 (Mid)
One-shot view of the full web width—OR-D (Mid+)
Automatic recognition with alarm, marking, stop or reject—OK series (High)
Clear film, metallic or holographic ink, deep emboss: send a photo of the print and we tell you whether the defect will show.

Route in one line: marks only → Scout 3 / OR-A (Entry); saved positions → Overseer (Mid); full width in one frame → OR-D (Mid+); automatic 100% → OK (High).

Limits

What it does not do

  • No automatic detection. It does not compare every repeat to a reference and alarm, mark, stop or reject.
  • No inspection record. It shows the area under the camera, not a full-web log, and a still image is not a quality record.
  • The operator still judges. It applies one decision consistently, which is why the acceptance criteria must be written before the trial.
  • No monitor, backlight or special light in the base set. Clear film, metallic ink and deep emboss are confirmed from a photo or a sample, not from a datasheet.

2 MP is enough here. The sensor plus 30X optical zoom resolves fine print inside a 100 × 75 mm window. A 4K full-width system covers the whole web at lower magnification — that is a different job (OR-D, Mid+; OK, High). Choose by what you must see, not by megapixel count.

On the press

Line and installation

The system mounts on the press frame or on a stand over the web. It works on label flexo, combination, stack, satellite and gravure presses. It needs no internet connection; the controller and monitor run locally.

  1. Choose the traverse: manual (4000R) or motorized (4000M).
  2. Confirm the press drawing and mounting position.
  3. Fix the rail and brackets; check the camera-to-web distance.
  4. Fit the sensor and sync; run a slow-speed image check.
  5. Set field of view and zoom for the first job.
  6. Train the operator on freeze, split-screen and zoom.
  7. Record the setup for repeat jobs.

Your print

Will it see your defect?

Send a photo of the print. We tell you whether the defect will show on this system — and if it will not, we say so before you order.

What decides itHow we judge it
The defectThe smallest mark you must catch, measured on your print, from the photo
Field of view100 × 75 mm covers your repeat — the photo shows whether it fits
SyncGear sensor, proximity or encoder, depending on your press

Send a photo, not a parcel

A clear phone photo of the printed web is enough for a first answer. If it is borderline, a short run on your material settles it — no need to ship anything first.

  • A photo of the print, with the defect visible if you have one
  • What the defect is, and how small it is
  • The press type or a photo of the mounting area
1. Window 100 x 75 mm what the head actually sees 2. One pixel = 0.031 mm 1600 px across the web, 900 along it 3. A 2 x 2 px mark about 0.06 mm — the floor this head can judge
One pixel here covers 0.031 mm of web, so a defect has to occupy two to three pixels before the operator can call it.

FAQ

Observer 4000 FAQs: what buyers ask before an order

4000R or 4000M — which one do I take?

Narrow web, and the operator can walk along the press: 4000R. Wide web, or you want the camera to patrol while the operator stays at the screen: 4000M. Both use the same camera, controller and software.

Is it a 100% inspection system?

No. It freezes the print on screen and the operator judges. Systems that alarm, mark, stop or reject automatically are a different range — the OK series.

Will it show clear film, metallic ink or deep emboss?

Often yes, but it depends on the lighting and the contrast of the defect. Send a photo of the print and we tell you before you order.

What do I need on site before it arrives?

A mounting point on the press or a stand, 110–240 V power, a 24-inch HDMI monitor (bought locally) and a dry, level floor. The rail and sensor come with the set.

Can we see it running on our own print?

Yes. Send a photo first; if the defect is marginal we run your material and send the screen recording, so you can judge the image yourself.

Choose

Where the Observer 4000 sits in the range

Five tiers, one job each. The Observer 4000 and OR-B/C share the Entry+ tier: still-picture viewing, no automatic judgement.

TierModelsWhat it doesBest for
EntryScout 3, OR-AMark and crosshair viewingRegistration marks only
Entry+Observer 4000 R / M, OR-B/CCapture and freeze the print; operator judgesGeneral print viewing, narrow to wide web
MidOverseer 100 / 200Touch-screen GUI, saved-position patrol, AutoScanRepeat patrol between fixed positions
Mid+OR-DFull-width image in one shotSee the whole web at once
HighOK-4000 / OK-6000Automatic detection, alarm, marking, stop or reject100% inspection and records
Inside Entry+, the choice between Observer 4000 and OR-B/C is about platform preference: the Observer is the longer-established system (10,000+ sets in service), OR-B/C is the newer build. Both do the same viewing job.
