Paper cups are one of the most stable consumable businesses in the packaging world — coffee chains, milk-tea shops, water brands and airlines all consume them daily. The most common question we hear: “What machines do I need for a paper cup production line?”
This guide walks the complete process from PE-coated paper roll to finished cups, machine by machine, with the VIE models for every step.
The Process Flow at a Glance
1. Roll printing — print the artwork onto the PE-coated paper roll (flexo, up to 10 colors)
2. Blank die cutting — punch the printed roll into cup fan blanks (the fan-shaped side walls)
3. Cup forming — the cup machine rolls the fan, seals the side, curls the rim and attaches the bottom
4. Options — embossing, double-wall assembly, paper lids, counting and packing
For double-wall (insulated) cups the flow extends: form the inner cup, emboss the outer fan, then assemble the two layers.
Machine by Machine
1. Roll Printing — VLP950W-10C Flexo (10 Colors)
Cup paper is printed roll-to-roll before die cutting. The VLP950W-10C ten-color flexo printing machine (max web width 950 mm, 60 m/min, ±0.15 mm registration) runs the printed roll with web guiding and web inspection built in. Optional companions: VPF-900 plate mounter, VPF-1050 plate fixing machine and VRC-1000 anilox roller cleaner — the complete plate-to-print workflow.
2. Blank Die Cutting — VDC-1200 / VDC-950
The die cutting machine punches cup fans from the printed roll:
- VDC-1200 roll paper die cutting machine — max cutting area 1020 × 600 mm, 140–210 strokes/min
- VDC-950 — the smaller-frame variant for narrower rolls
ZWF-1000 / ZWF-1300 roll slitters handle the plain-paper and bottom-stock prep, alongside the slitting line.
3. Cup Forming — VPC Series (2 oz to 22 oz)
The forming machine is the heart of the line. VIE’s VPC range covers every cup size:
- VPC-9E — 2–9 oz economy, 60–65 cups/min
- VPC-12M — 2–12 oz, interchangeable molds, 70–90 cups/min
- VPC-H16 — 40 ml–16 oz, 80–95 cups/min
- VPC-H22 — 8–22 oz, 65–85 cups/min
- VPC-H6 — high-speed forming with automatic collection, 4–16 oz, 6,600–7,800 pcs/h
- VPC-DM — double-layer assembly, 5–16 oz
The VPC-H16 uses ultrasonic side sealing — a cleaner, stronger seam than hot-air bars, standard on the high-speed model.
4. Options — Double Wall, Embossing, Lids, Bowls
- VPC-E sleeve embossing machine — emboss the outer layer for grip and insulation, 8–16 oz at 3,000–3,600 pcs/h (details)
- VPC-D / VPC-DM — double-layer (double-wall) cup assembly, 5–16 oz at 4,200–5,400 pcs/h
- VPL-60 paper lid machine — paper lids for the full paper-solution cup
- VPB paper bowl machine — paper bowls from 20 oz to 50 oz (single/double PE), 35–45 bowls/min
- VPP-500D paper plate machine — 3–12 inch plates at 120–150 pcs/min (the same line family also covers plates)
- Cup counting, staking and packing machines close the line
Three Proven Line Configurations
Configuration A — Entry Line
Flexo printer → die cutter → VPC-9E / LF-70 → counting & packing
For 2–9 oz cups (water, small coffee) with the lowest entry investment.
Configuration B — Standard Coffee/Tea Line
Flexo printer → die cutter → VPC-12M or VPC-H16 (2–16 oz) → counting & packing
The workhorse configuration for milk-tea and coffee suppliers: interchangeable molds cover the full cup range on one machine.
Configuration C — Premium Double-Wall Line
Flexo printer → die cutter (inner + outer layers) → VPC-E embossing → VPC forming → VPC-D double-wall assembly → VPL-60 lids
The five-step double-wall line for premium hot-drink cups: printed outer layer, embossed insulation, paper lids — a fully paper-solution product.
Cup Size → Machine Mapping
| Cup you produce | Recommended machine | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 2–9 oz (water, espresso) | VPC-9E / LF-70 | 60–65 cups/min |
| 2–16 oz (milk tea, coffee, interchangeable molds) | VPC-12M / VPC-H16 | 70–95 cups/min |
| 8–22 oz large | VPC-H22 | 65–85 cups/min |
| Premium seam | VPC-H16 (ultrasonic side sealing) | 80–95 cups/min |
| Double-wall insulated | VPC-D / VPC-DM assembly | high speed |
| Bowls 20–50 oz | VPB paper bowl machine | 35–45 bowls/min |
| Paper lids | VPL-60 / VPT series | matches cup line |
Raw Materials to Plan For
- PE single or double coated paper 150–350 gsm — single PE for cold drinks, double PE for hot
- Water-based flexo ink for the roll printing step
- Bottom stock paper for the cup base
FAQ
Which machine covers the most cup sizes on one frame?
The VPC-12M and VPC-H16: interchangeable molds cover 2–16 oz without buying a second machine.
Ultrasonic or hot-air side sealing?
Hot-air bars are the economical standard; ultrasonic sealing (built into the VPC-H16) gives a cleaner, stronger seam for premium cups at higher speed.
Can I make bowls on the same line?
Bowls use the VPB paper bowl machine (20–50 oz). The printing and die cutting steps are shared.
