Paper Box Production Line: Machines, Process Flow & How to Set It Up

Paper food boxes — lunch boxes, burger clamshells, trays — are the fastest-growing replacement for plastic food containers. The production line is also one of the simplest in the paper industry: just three steps from paper roll to finished box, which is why so many converters start here.

The Process Flow at a Glance

1. Roll printing — flexo print the kraft roll with your food branding (water-based ink)

2. Die cutting — punch the printed roll into box blanks (the flat, creased box shapes)

3. Box forming — the box machine glues the corners and erects the blanks into rigid boxes

There are two ways to buy into this flow:

  • Full line (3 machines): you start from plain paper rolls — printing, die cutting and forming machines. Maximum margin, maximum control.
  • Starter (1 machine): you buy paper that is already printed and die-cut, and run only the box forming machine. Many of our customers started exactly this way, then added the upstream machines when volume grew.

Machine by Machine

1. Roll Printing — VLP950W-10C Flexo (10 Colors)

The VLP950W-10C ten-color flexo printing machine (max web width 950 mm, 60 m/min, ±0.15 mm registration) prints the kraft roll with water-based food-safe ink — 6 print stations with web guiding and web inspection built in, at 50–60 m/min, matched to the die layout of your box blanks. Optional companions: VPF-900 plate mounter, VPF-1050 plate fixing machine, VRC-1000 anilox roller cleaner. The same flexo printing machine family serves the paper bag line, so one printer can feed both products.

2. Die Cutting — VDC-1200 Roll Paper Die Cutter

The die cutter punches box blanks from the printed roll:

  • VDC-1200 — max cutting area 1020 × 600 mm, 140–210 strokes/min
  • VDC-950 — the smaller-frame variant for narrower rolls

Blank quality matters: sharp creases are what let the box erect cleanly in step 3.

3. Box Forming — VLB Erecting or VH Folding-Gluing

Two forming architectures cover two box families:

VLB series — carton erecting machines (lunch boxes, burger clamshells, food trays):

  • VLB-800 — single lane, automatic erecting: glues the corners and folds the die-cut blank into a rigid box. Handles the standard kraft lunch box range.
  • VLB-1000 — single lane, bigger box sizes
  • VLB-1400 — double lane: 120–450 boxes/min (16,000–27,000 pcs/h combined range), max box 450 × 450 mm

VPP-500D paper plate machine — the same line family also covers paper plates, 3–12 inch at 120–150 pcs/min, so one production setup can serve both boxes and plates.

VH series — paper box folding-gluing machines (glued-style boxes):

  • VH-B all-in-one — folding and gluing in one machine for paper box bodies
  • VH-M grouping type — for boxes produced in grouped/multi-cavity layouts

Three Proven Line Configurations

Configuration A — Starter (1 Machine)

Buy die-cut, printed blanks → VLB-800 → finished boxes

The lowest-risk entry: one machine, one operator. You buy printed and die-cut blanks, and only run the forming step. When volume grows, add the printing and die cutting machines upstream.

Configuration B — Full Line from Rolls

VLP950W-10C flexo → VDC-950 die cutter → VLB-1400 / VLB-800

The complete three-machine line from paper rolls, exactly as it ships in our production line quotation. Full control of printing, blanks and forming — the configuration for stable, high-volume food box supply.

Configuration C — Glued-Style Box Line

Die-cut blanks → VH-B all-in-one / VH-M grouping folding-gluing machine

For box styles that are folded and glued rather than corner-erected — the VH series runs the glued-box family at speed.

Raw Materials to Plan For

  • Kraft paper ~250 gsm — one ton yields roughly 30,000–50,000 boxes (a 32 × 40 cm blank layout)
  • Water-based glue — 1–2 kg per day
  • Water-based flexo ink — 50–80 kg pure ink per day, diluted 25–40 kg/day depending on the design

FAQ

Can I start with just the box forming machine?

Yes — it is the most common start. You buy printed and die-cut blanks, run the VLB-800, and add the printing and die cutting machines when your volume covers them.

Single lane or double lane?

The VLB-1400 double lane doubles output per cycle for the same floor process. Choose it when one box size runs at high, stable volume.

Erecting or folding-gluing — which family?

Corner-erected clamshells (VLB) are the food-box standard. Folding-glued boxes (VH) cover box styles with glued side seams. Send us a photo of your box and we will confirm the family.
