Pull Bow, Star Bow, Curly Bow or Ribbon Egg? How to Choose a Gift Bow Making Machine

Quick answer: Four bow types dominate gift packaging, and each needs its own machine: pull bows ship flat and inflate when pulled (VDB-P Decoration Butterfly pull bow machine), star bows come out display-ready (VSB Decoration Star bow making machine), curly bows are multi-strand spirals (VDB-C Decoration Curly Bow machine), and ribbon eggs are semi-automatic wound balls that retail as-is (VRE Decoration Ribbon egg machine). Choose by three things: the bow your market actually buys, the capacity tier you need, and how often you change sizes.

Gift bows look like a sideline product. They are not. The global gift packaging market was estimated at USD 29.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 44.8 billion by 2032 — a 6.3% CAGR — with ribbons and bows called out as a growth segment (source: Stratistics MRC, Gift Packaging Market). For a decoration or converting plant, bows are a low-material-cost SKU that rides both the Christmas season and the wedding season on the same equipment.

This guide maps the four bow types VIE Machinery builds machines for, what each production process looks like, and how to pick the right machine before you commit.

Four bow types, four machines

“Gift bow” is not one product. Buyers search for — and pay differently for — four distinct constructions:

Bow typeHow it is madeWhy buyers love itVIE machine
Pull bow (butterfly pull bow)Ribbon web pre-cut and assembled flat; inflates into a ball when the inner string is pulledShips flat, pulls into shape in one second, no skills neededVDB-P Decoration Butterfly pull bow machine
Star bowRibbon loops folded and wire-stitched onto an adhesive card, pre-formed at the machineDisplay-ready straight out of the box; classic gift-box topperVSB Decoration Star bow making machine
Curly bowMultiple narrow ribbon strands curled into springs and gathered into a fluffy ballHigh perceived volume at low material costVDB-C Decoration Curly Bow machine
Ribbon eggRibbon wound into an egg-shaped ball, dispensed or pulled when usedSells as a retail item itself (craft and DIY channels)VRE Decoration Ribbon egg machine

The constructions are not interchangeable, and neither are the machines. A star bow machine cannot make pull bows; a pull bow line cannot turn out display-ready bows. Deciding the bow type first is what keeps your equipment budget pointed at the product your customers actually buy.

Pull bows: ship flat, sell by the pallet

Pull bows are the logistics winner of the bow family. The machine cuts side arcs into a ribbon web and assembles the flat bow piece with a plastic buckle in one pass; the end customer pulls an inner string and the piece gathers into a full spherical bow, typically 6 to 15 inches across.

Two consequences matter for a producer:

  • Storage and freight: flat pull bows stack. The same carton volume carries far more sellable units than pre-formed bows — meaningful when you fill Christmas-season containers.
  • One machine, one size: each VDB-P Decoration Butterfly pull bow machine is set up for a single bow size; changing size means changing the mold set. Plan the machine-plus-molds combination around the size mix your market orders.

Pull bows run the full effect-ribbon palette: metallic, iridescent, holographic, glitter and metal-coated PP ribbon — the finishes that dominate holiday and premium gift packaging.

Reference capability (VDB-P): 500–1,000 pcs/hour; finished bow width 1.5–2.5 cm, length 32–45 cm.

Star bows: display-ready and kraft-paper friendly

A star bow machine does the whole assembly at the machine: ribbon, wire and adhesive card feed in separately; the machine arm folds the loops, cuts the card and fixes the wire stitch — the bow comes out finished, ready to stick on a gift box.

What makes the VSB Decoration Star bow making machine flexible is size handling: the standard model covers 1–4 inch bows, and size changes are an adjustment rather than a rebuild. An enlarged model covers 2–6 inch bows for tree toppers and large gift sets.

One material note worth planning around: star bow machines run PP ribbon and plastic film — and kraft paper. As brands push recyclable paper-based packaging for 2026, kraft-paper star bows are the easiest “eco” story in the bow category, made on equipment you may already own.

Reference capability (VSB): 350–600 pcs/hour; 220 V, 400 W; three-roll feeding (ribbon, wire, card).

Curly bows: volume through multi-strand curling

Curly bows are the fluffy “spring” bows built from a dozen narrow ribbon strands. The VDB-C Decoration Curly Bow machine feeds up to 12 ribbon units simultaneously, curls each strand in a heated water-tank unit, gathers the strands and cuts to a preset length with a low-noise cylinder — batch consistency comes from the digital preset counter rather than operator skill.

Curly bows punch above their material weight: a ball of curled springs looks far larger than the ribbon it consumes, which is why they are a fixture in gift retail, floral wrapping and party decor.

Reference capability (VDB-C): 500–900 pcs/hour; ribbon width 6–15 mm; finished length 300–1,000 mm; 220 V, 0.38 kW.

Ribbon eggs: the semi-automatic entry point

Not every bow product needs a fully automatic line. Ribbon eggs — egg-shaped wound balls of curling ribbon, familiar from craft stores and balloon counters — are produced on the VRE Decoration Ribbon egg machine, a semi-automatic winder: the machine winds and measures, an operator feeds and offsides.

At 80 kg and a compact footprint, it is the lightest entry into ribbon products, and the output is itself a retail SKU in craft and DIY channels — not just an intermediate for further bow making.

Reference capability (VRE): 1,000–3,000 pcs/day; ribbon width 5–10 mm; length 10–50 m per egg; 220 V, 450 W.

Match the ribbon system to your market

Bow machines are ribbon consumers, so plan the ribbon side with the same care:

  • Effect PP ribbon (metallic, iridescent, holographic, glitter, metal-coated) — the workhorse for pull, star and curly bows in seasonal and premium packaging
  • Kraft paper and film — the recyclable-material play for star bows, aligned with 2026 sustainable-packaging demand
  • Upstream sizing — big ribbon rolls rarely arrive at bow-machine widths. A VRS Decoration Ribbon slitting machine or a VRW Ribbon slitting and rewinding to spool machine cuts master rolls to the widths your bow line consumes, and keeps the bow machines fed with consistent, tangle-free rolls

A common layout: one slitting machine feeding two or three bow machines, with roll widths changed per production run.

Three questions before you order

1. Which bow does your market actually buy? Christmas and gift-box markets skew to pull and star bows; floral and party channels buy curly bows; craft retail buys ribbon eggs. Start from the orders you want, not from the machine spec sheet.

2. How often will you change sizes? If you run long campaigns in fixed sizes, dedicated one-size setups are efficient. If you serve mixed seasonal orders, the VSB’s adjust-by-design size range (or multiple molds behind one VDB-P) matters more than peak speed.

3. What capacity tier fits your season? Rough reference tiers: 350–600 pcs/h (star bows), 500–1,000 pcs/h (pull bows), 500–900 pcs/h (curly bows), 1,000–3,000 pcs/day semi-automatic (ribbon eggs). Match the tier to your peak-season order book rather than the top of the range.

Building a year-round bow line

Bows are seasonal on the retail side but not on the production side. A practical pattern we see: PP effect bows (pull and star) fill the Christmas build-up from summer onward, then the same workshop shifts to wedding and event styles in the first half — different ribbons and sizes, same machine park, no idle season. Pairing the bow machines with an upstream VRS/VRW slitting and rewinding unit keeps ribbon widths consistent across both seasons.

Frequently asked questions

Can one machine make different bow sizes?

Star bows: yes — the VSB standard model covers 1–4 inch with simple adjustment, and an enlarged model covers 2–6 inch. Pull bows: one size per VDB-P machine; other sizes run by changing the mold set.

What’s the difference between pull bows and star bows as products?

Pull bows ship flat and inflate when the user pulls a string — cheap to store and ship. Star bows come out pre-formed and display-ready. Retailers often stock both: flat bows for volume SKUs, formed bows for premium gift sets.

Which materials do bow machines run?

PP ribbon, plastic film and kraft paper rolls for pull, star and curly bows; satin, grosgrain and organza style ribbons are the typical input for ribbon bow-tying applications. Ribbon egg machines run narrow curling ribbon, 5–10 mm.

What output can I expect per machine?

Reference figures: star bows 350–600 pcs/h; pull bows 500–1,000 pcs/h; curly bows 500–900 pcs/h; ribbon eggs 1,000–3,000 pcs/day depending on size and operator rhythm.

Do you have an upstream machine for ribbon rolls?

Yes — the VRS Decoration Ribbon slitting machine and the VRW Ribbon slitting and rewinding to spool machine prepare bow-machine-ready roll widths from master rolls.

Can production run year-round?

Yes. Christmas-season bows (PP effect ribbon) and wedding-season styles use the same machines with different ribbon systems and sizes — the seasonality is in your order book, not in the equipment.
